Stop the presses! ‘The Paper’ hasn’t even hit our screens yet, but it’s already bagged a Season 2 renewal. US streamer, Peacock, clearly thinks it has a comedy headline worth running with, handing the Office spinoff an early pick-up a full day before its premiere. Sky Max and streaming service NOW will carry the show here in the UK.
Announced live on NBC’s Today by stars Domhnall Gleeson (The Patient) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus), the renewal signals a rare vote of confidence usually reserved for returning favourites. It means the newsroom mockumentary should be back around the same time next year, with co-creator Greg Daniels (Parks & Rec, Upload) already sketching out Season 2 ideas.
A New Scoop From The World Of The Office
‘The Paper’ follows Ned Sampson (played by Gleeson), a former toilet paper salesman who suddenly finds himself named editor-in-chief of the struggling Toledo Truth-Teller, a once-proud Midwestern newspaper now down to a skeleton staff. Armed with big dreams but very little journalistic backup, Ned tries to drag the publication back into relevance. Conveniently, the same documentary crew who once immortalised the staff of Dunder Mifflin are there to capture the chaos.
That Office DNA is no accident. Daniels, the creative mind who adapted the original Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant sitcom for NBC, co-created this series with Michael Koman (Nathan for You). They are joined by a roll call of familiar names behind the camera including The Office pilot director Ken Kwapis and long-time writer/producer/actor Paul Lieberstein (aka Toby). To really seal the crossover, Oscar Nuñez reprises his role as Oscar, linking the shows on screen.
Who’s In The Newsroom?
Alongside Gleeson and Impacciatore, the ensemble features Chelsea Frei (The Moodys), Melvin Gregg (Snowfall), Gbemisola Ikumelo (Famalam), Alex Edelman (The Great Indoors), Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever), and Tim Key (Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa). Guest stars across Season 1 include Tracy Letts, Molly Ephraim, and Nancy Lenehan among others.
NBCUniversal exec Pearlena Igbokwe has already praised Daniels’ work, saying the characters “are ones you just grow to love” and hailing the way the first season sticks the landing. Early buzz from critics and insiders has been equally positive, which likely explains Peacock’s eagerness to get printing presses rolling on Season 2.
When Can You Watch?
All ten episodes of Season 1 will arrive as a binge release, a deliberate move echoing how The Office itself became a binge favourite in the streaming age.
‘The Paper’ Season 1 premieres Thursday, 4th September 2025 on Peacock in the USA, and Friday, 5th September 2025 on Sky Max & NOW in the UK.
