Disney has confirmed that Ren Meguro, the hugely popular actor and member of J-pop sensation Snow Man, is stepping into the world of Shogun, with production on the second season set to begin this January in Vancouver. Meguro plays Kazutada in the new chapter, which takes place a decade after the events of the internationally acclaimed first season.

Meguro is the newest addition to a growing group of season two cast members. He joins Asami Mizukawa (Aya), Masataka Kubota (Hy?ga), Sho Kaneta (Hidenobu), Takaaki Enoki (Lord Ito) and Jun Kunimura (G?da) who were previously announced.

Season two also brings back an outstanding ensemble of returning stars led by Hiroyuki Sanada (Toranaga) and Cosmo Jarvis (Blackthorne). They reunite with Fumi Nikaidô (Ochiba), Shinnosuke Abe (Buntaro), Hiroto Kanai (Omi), Yoriko Dôguchi (Kiri), Tommy Bastow (Alvito), Yuko Miyamoto (Gin), Eita Okuno (Saeki) and Yuka Kouri (Kiku).

Meguro spoke about joining the series in a long and heartfelt statement, which is included in full in the press release. He describes being inspired by the show’s unique depiction of Japan, his admiration for Hiroyuki Sanada’s vision, and the surreal experience of actually landing the role after a year of imagining himself on set. He adds: “I am committed to honouring the legacy that so many have built before me and to carefully shaping the role entrusted to me in this remarkable series.”

The first season of ‘Shogun’ became a cultural phenomenon, sweeping 18 Emmy Awards and becoming the first FX series to win Outstanding Drama Series. Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai both made history with their Lead Actor and Lead Actress wins, while the show picked up accolades across the Golden Globes, SAG, PGA, WGA, DGA, TCA and more. Season one is streaming now on Disney+ in the UK.

Season two continues the saga ten years later as the political and personal fates of Toranaga and Blackthorne remain tightly bound. The series, based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks and produced by FX Productions.
