BBC Picks Up ‘Dustfall’ As Anna Torv Leads Atmospheric New Crime Drama Adaptation

by Dave Elliott

The BBC has snapped up Dustfall, a tense new Australian crime drama coming to BBC iPlayer and BBC One, with the brilliant Anna Torv (The Newsreader, Territory) leading the charge in a story that digs deep into justice, loyalty, and the dark corners where toxic behaviour hides. The UK debut is coming in 2026, but the series is already in production on Australia’s Gold Coast, shaping up to be a moody Tropic Noir with plenty of bite.

Adapted from Vikki Petraitis’s novel The Unbelieved, the six-part series introduces Torv as Detective Tig, a woman returning to her hometown of North Gap after years spent working cases in the city. Tig expects a quieter pace, but instead uncovers a disturbing pattern of drink-spiking assaults. Matters escalate even further when one of the men linked to the crimes turns up murdered, throwing the investigation into chaos and confronting Tig with a community where victims are often dismissed, and predators blend into the background.

ABC handles the original broadcast in Australia, with the BBC acquiring UK rights from Federation International. The series boasts an impressive writing team including Dianne Taylor (After The Party), Stuart Page (Total Control), Belinda Chayko (The Survivors) and Beatrix Christian (Black Snow). Direction comes from Emma Freeman (The Family Next Door, The Newsreader), who also executive produces alongside Anna Torv, Deb Balderstone, Xavier Marchand and Daisy Gilbert.

The ensemble cast is stacked with talent. Joining Torv are Juliet Stevenson (Truly, Madly, Deeply), Peter Fenton (Love Is a Four Letter Word), Bert Labonte (Colin From Accounts), Lila McGuire (Goolagong), Ling Cooper Tang (Troppo), Gemma Chua-Tran (Heartbreak High), Alice Ansara (Black Snow), Kate Box (Deadloch), Martin Sacks (The Survivors), Theo Haitana (Heart of the Man), Ben Knight (Bay of Fires), Jay Ryan (Territory), Ed Wightman (Last Days of the Space Age), and Luke J Morgan (NCIS: Sydney), among many others.

BBC Head of Scripted Pre-buy Acquisitions Sue Deeks shared her enthusiasm, saying:
“Starring the magnificent Anna Torv, Dustfall is a powerful, emotionally charged crime drama that is as thought-provoking as it is compelling.”
