A fresh wave of chaos is heading for our screens as the BBC releases a brand new trailer for ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea‘, the upcoming five-part sci-fi drama arriving this December. The footage debuted on The One Show and features leads Russell Tovey (Barclay Pierre Dupont), Gugu Mbatha Raw (Salt), and Jemma Redgrave (Doctor Who) as humanity faces an unimaginable threat rising from the ocean depths.
The story builds around a fearsome ancient species that emerges from the sea, revealing itself to the world and triggering a global crisis. UNIT, led by Kate Lethbridge Stewart, fights to keep order as civilisation stares down the possibility of extinction. The trailer gives a taste of the scale, the mystery, and the mounting panic as the surface world collides with something far older and far more powerful.
Backing the leads is a stacked supporting cast. Ruth Madeley (Doctor Who) returns as Shirley Bingham. Alexander Devrient (Killing Eve) joins as Colonel Christofer Ibrahim, with Colin McFarlane (Outlander) as General Austin Pierce. The ensemble also includes Adrian Lukis, Patrick Baladi, Francesca Corney, Mei Mac, Vincent Franklin, Waleed Hammad, Iestyn Arwel, Hannah Donaldson, Manpreet Bachu, and Ann Akinjirin.
Behind the scenes, the series comes from Bad Wolf and BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television. It was created by Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies and written by Davies with Executive Producer Pete McTighe. Joel Collins, Julie Gardner, and Jane Tranter also serve as Executive Producers for Bad Wolf. The season is directed by Dylan Holmes Williams, with music by Lorne Balfe.
The show will land on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK this December, launching with a double bill, while international viewers will find it on Disney Plus in 2026.
‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’ Season 1 premieres Sunday, 7th December 2025 on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and 2026 on Disney Plus internationally.
