Prime Video has confirmed that ‘The Assassin’ will be back for a second series, with production set to begin later this year. The stylish thriller, written and created by Harry and Jack Williams and produced by Two Brothers Pictures, proved a strong hit on its debut and is now heading back into the shadows.
Keeley Hawes (Miss Austen, The Bodyguard) returns as Julie Green, the former assassin whose attempt at a quiet life on a Greek island didn’t exactly go to plan. Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor, Bates Motel) is also back as her son Edward, alongside Shalom Brune-Franklin (Baby Reindeer, The Girlfriend) as Kayla and Devon Terrell (It’s What’s Inside, Barry) as Ezra.
Series one saw Julie’s peaceful existence unravel when Edward arrived searching for answers about his paternity, dragging long-buried secrets into the light. Series two picks up after their disastrous trip to Northern Europe, with mother and son estranged once again following a mysterious fall-out no one wants to talk about.
Julie, it seems, cannot quite escape her old life. She has slipped back into her assassin ways while also attempting to navigate something arguably more dangerous: the dating scene. Meanwhile, when Edward’s honeymoon goes spectacularly off course, he is forced to reunite with Julie to take on Spain’s corrupt underworld. Family therapy this is not.
Speaking about the return, Keeley Hawes said:
“I can’t wait to step back into Julie’s world. To reunite with Freddie and our extraordinary cast, and to dive deeper into Julie’s life and her complicated relationship with Edward, is a privilege. There is so much more to uncover, and audiences are in for a treat.”
Freddie Highmore added:
“What fun it’ll be to get the gang back together – I can’t wait to be reunited with so many of the cast and crew. Harry and Jack have cooked up another spectacular adventure, and I feel so lucky to have the brilliant Keeley as a sparring partner once again.”
Executive producers Daisy Mount and Alex Mercer said:
“Reuniting with Keeley, Freddie, Shalom and Devon is a real privilege as we dive back into the world of The Assassin – of course, we couldn’t leave them sailing off into the sunset in blissful harmony. The second season is full of twists, turns and thrilling unpredictability – just like the characters at the centre of it.”
All3Media International’s Maartje Horchner commented:
“We’re delighted that this fabulously stylish and witty thriller, so well received globally, is returning. The cast really made the characters their own – and Jack and Harry’s second series takes them on a hugely engaging journey that we know audiences will find entertaining.”
The six-part second series is produced by Two Brothers Pictures in association with All3Media International. Harry and Jack Williams once again serve as writers and executive producers, with Sarah Hammond, Alex Mercer and Daisy Mount executive producing for Two Brothers. Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore also executive produce. John Griffin returns as producer, with Terry McDonough directing episodes one to three and Sarah O’Gorman directing episodes four to six.
