The BBC has snapped up ‘Deano’, a brand-new adult animated comedy following a mischievous eight-year-old with a heart of gold. Blending sharp satire with the chaos of modern family life, the series is heading to BBC iPlayer and BBC One, while US viewers will be able to catch it on Hulu.
Originally launched as a web series, ‘Deano’ built a sizeable global following, racking up millions of views across social media before making the leap to television. Now, the 8 x 30-minute series arrives with some serious backing behind it.
Created and written by Australian duo Dean Thomas and David Ferrier, the show is co-produced by Hooligan Animation, BBC Studios and 20th Television Animation. BBC Studios serves as the lead studio, with Hulu handling US distribution. Notably, Joe Brumm, the creator of Bluey, is on board as script editor and executive producer for Hooligan, adding a strong pedigree to the project.
The story centres on Deano, a cheeky, spirited kid growing up in a tough neighbourhood in a house that probably should not pass inspection. Despite the odds stacked against him, Deano embraces everyone he meets, from local teenage dropouts to the town police chief. At the heart of the series is his friendship with Kit, his timid best mate from the wealthier side of town. It sounds like a classic odd-couple dynamic, filtered through irreverent humour and biting social commentary.

Production takes place at Hooligan’s studios in Brisbane, Australia, with support from the Australian Federal Government’s Producer Offset and a PDV grant from the State of Queensland.
