‘Ghosts’ Cast Drop Cryptic Hints That BBC Sitcom Could Be Making A Comeback

The show ended in 2023 — but something’s clearly afoot at Button House…

It looks like the residents of Button House may not be resting in peace for much longer. Several cast and crew members from the beloved BBC sitcom ‘Ghosts‘ have been posting a cryptic video clip online, and fans are absolutely convinced it means a comeback is on the way.

The teaser, which has been circulating on social media this month, shows the door of Button House being opened by an invisible presence. So far, writers and cast members Simon Farnaby (Paddington 2), Martha Howe-Douglas (Horrible Histories), Jim Howick (Horrible Histories), Mathew Baynton (Horrible Histories), and Laurence Rickard (Horrible Histories) have all shared it, with no explanation whatsoever.

Naturally, fans have absolutely lost their minds.

“What is the meaning of this?!” wrote one person in response to Farnaby’s post. “It must be coming back! Pleeeeeeeeeeeease??!!” exclaimed another. There’s also considerable speculation as to what form a return might take, with plenty of viewers hoping for a film: “Fingers crossed it’s movie time for the sublime Ghosts,” said one fan, while another chimed in on X: “Is it Ghosts – the movie? Please say it’s Ghosts – the movie.”

Ghosts wrapped up after five series and a Christmas special in 2023. When the writing team — Farnaby, Howe-Douglas, Baynton, Howick, Rickard, and Ben Willbond — announced the end, they wrote: “After five incredible years haunting the halls of Button House, we have decided that the time is right to let our beloved sitcom Ghosts rest in peace.”

The BBC’s director of comedy Jon Petrie said at the time: “We are officially in mourning for the end of this BBC Comedy Classic. We can’t thank the Ghosts team enough for five incredible series (not to mention some perfect Christmas Specials)… We look forward to working with the team on new projects.”

That last bit is looking rather interesting right now, isn’t it?

The show, which centred on a group of ghosts from different historical periods haunting a country house alongside a living couple played by Charlotte Ritchie (Fresh Meat) and Kiell Smith-Bynoe (Back), was a BAFTA-nominated hit during its run and has since spawned a hugely successful American remake on CBS.

No official announcement has been made, but with this many cast and crew members posting the same clip at the same time, it really does feel like something is coming. We’ll be watching closely.
