Sky and STARZ are heading into the ring together for a brand new British boxing drama, with ‘Fightland‘ landing later this year. The eight-episode crime series comes executive produced by Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson through his G-Unit Film & Television, and looks to blend gritty London street drama with the high-stakes world of professional boxing.
Howard Charles (Top Boy, Whitstable Pearl) leads the cast as Maduka ‘Duke’ Kilroy, a disgraced former heavyweight world champion who returns to London after a stint in prison, looking to settle scores with the crime family he believes betrayed him. It’s a world of money, power, and brutal ambition, both inside and outside the ring.
Joining Charles is an impressive ensemble. Nicholas Pinnock (Hedda, For Life) plays Kingsley Marshall, a Jamaican-born, South London-bred criminal kingpin with ties to both boxing and gambling. Deborah Ayorinde (THEM, Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue) is Joy Marshall, Kingsley’s wife carving out her own empire, while Charles Babalola (The Outlaws, Black Mirror) plays their brash and unpredictable son Ezekiel ‘Zeek’ Marshall.
Anita-Joy Uwajeh (Vampire Academy, Atlanta) takes on the role of Cebella ‘Cece’ Marshall, the sharp, business-minded daughter who runs the family’s gambling operation. Tahirah Sharif (The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Tower) plays Kim Harper, a ring card girl with deep roots in the London boxing scene who befriends Duke on his return. Tyler Conti (The Gentlemen, Tell Me Everything) is Justin ‘Jay’ Hall, Duke’s best friend who’s fallen on hard times in his absence, and Richard Pepple (The Hack, Gangs of London) rounds out the main cast as Gary ‘Gazzer’ Kilroy, Duke’s estranged father who runs a community boxing gym in Streatham.
The series is produced by Expanded Media’s Francis Hopkinson (Wallander, Bancroft) and Kate Leadbetter (Woman in White, Catherine the Great), alongside Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson. Showrunner duties are shared by Damione Macedon and Raphael Jackson Jr. (both of Power, BMF, Genius: MLK/X), who also serve as executive producers and writers, with Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan and Marlon Smith as further executive producers and writers.
Sky UK and Europe’s Group Director of Acquisitions, Katie Keenan, said: “Fightland is a bold and compelling British production with a distinctive voice and the potential for true global impact. We are proud to partner with STARZ to continue offering premium, character-driven storytelling for our customers. This series is a natural fit for our growing Sky audiences who are drawn to ambitious, high-impact drama.”
STARZ President of Original Programming Kathryn Busby added: “We’re thrilled to be stepping back in the ring with our partners at Sky and look forward to building upon the next chapter of our long-standing creative collaboration together. Fightland delivers a dynamic blend of action and fearless, character-driven storytelling set against the vibrant backdrop of British boxing. We’re proud to debut this bold drama as our first-fully owned original series.”
