by Dave Elliott

Prime Video has revealed a first-look image from its upcoming live-action adaptation of God of War, as production officially begins on the highly anticipated series from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

The image shows Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) as Kratos alongside Callum Vinson (Chucky) as Atreus, marking the first time we’ve seen the iconic father-and-son duo in live-action form.

Based on PlayStation’s hugely successful mythology-inspired video game franchise, the series follows Kratos and Atreus as they set out to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Along the way, Kratos attempts to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

The project has already received a two-season order.

Joining Hurst and Vinson in the previously announced cast are Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) as Odin, Ed Skrein (Deadpool) as Baldur, Max Parker (Emmerdale) as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The Tourist) as Thor, Teresa Palmer (A Discovery of Witches) as Sif, Alastair Duncan (The Batman) as Mimir, Jeff Gulka (Arrow) as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld) as Brok.

Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. He is joined by executive producers Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers.

Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Sh?gun, The Boys, Fallout) will direct the first two episodes.
