‘Lanterns’ Teaser Lands As DC’s Green Lantern Series Targets August Premiere On HBO Max

by Dave Elliott

HBO Max has released the first teaser for Lanterns, the upcoming DC Studios drama that brings the legendary Green Lantern characters to television. The series stars Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodlines), Aaron Pierre (Krypton, Rebel Ridge), and Kelly Macdonald (Line of Duty, Boardwalk Empire), and is currently set to debut later this August on HBO in the US, with streaming available on HBO Max.

Based on DC’s iconic Green Lantern comics, ‘Lanterns’ follows new recruit John Stewart and veteran Lantern Hal Jordan, two members of an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps. The pair find themselves drawn into a mysterious murder investigation in the American heartland, uncovering secrets that reach far beyond a small town crime.

Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Bloodlines) stars as Hal Jordan, a seasoned Lantern with a long history in the Corps, while Aaron Pierre (Krypton, Rebel Ridge) plays John Stewart, a newly recruited Lantern stepping into a world of cosmic responsibility. Kelly Macdonald (Line of Duty, Boardwalk Empire) appears as Sheriff Kerry, a determined law officer fiercely protective of her family and community as unsettling truths begin to emerge in her town.

The supporting cast also includes Garret Dillahunt (High Potential, Fear the Walking Dead, The Mindy Project) as William Macon, a charismatic but conspiracy minded modern cowboy; Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of, Never Have I Ever) as Zoe, a composed and influential figure navigating powerful circles; and Ulrich Thomsen (Banshee, The Blacklist, Counterpart) as Sinestro, the formidable former Green Lantern whose ambitions and charm make him a dangerous adversary.

The series is co-created by Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers), and acclaimed comic writer Tom King. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes (Doctor Who, Slow Horses, Black Mirror), with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also directing across the season. Executive producers include Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt and Hawes.

‘Lanterns’ forms part of the new DC Studios slate overseen by Gunn and Safran, expanding the studio’s storytelling into television while connecting with the wider DC universe.

Lanterns’ does not yet have a UK premiere date but will debut on HBO and stream on HBO Max in the US this August.
