The BBC is doubling down on one of its biggest modern entertainment hits, confirming a new multi-year deal that keeps ‘The Traitors‘ and its spin-off ‘The Celebrity Traitors‘ on BBC One and BBC iPlayer until at least 2030.
The smash-hit psychological competition series, produced by Studio Lambert Scotland, has become one of the UK’s most talked-about shows since launching in 2022, with its mix of deception, alliances, banishments and dramatic “murders” turning it into a cultural phenomenon. The new agreement ensures several more seasons of both versions of the format will continue to unfold at the now-iconic Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands.
As part of the deal, multiple new series of both formats are now locked in. ‘The Traitors’ will return for Series 5 in 2027, followed by Series 6 in 2028, Series 7 in 2029, and Series 8 in 2030. Meanwhile ‘The Celebrity Traitors’ will return later in 2026 for Series 2, followed by Series 3 in 2027, Series 4 in 2028 and Series 5 in 2029.
The franchise continues to deliver enormous viewing figures for the BBC. The fourth series of ‘The Traitors’, which aired in January 2026, reached a 28-day average audience of 12.5 million, a 22% increase on Series 3. Over half the viewing came via BBC iPlayer, which accounted for 6.6 million viewers, marking a 28% increase in streaming compared to the previous season.
The celebrity edition has proven even bigger. ‘The Celebrity Traitors’, which debuted in October 2025, averaged 14.9 million viewers across its run, with the finale peaking at 15.4 million, making it the biggest entertainment episode across the UK market since 2016 and the most-watched series across all genres and platforms in 2025.
The show also performs strongly with younger audiences, attracting 2.6 million viewers aged 16–34, representing around one-fifth of the audience and a 12% increase compared to the previous season.
The success of the franchise extends beyond viewing figures. According to a BBC economic report published in November 2025, filming the various editions of the show has generated an estimated £21.8 million boost to Scotland’s economy since production began in 2022.

Alongside the UK versions, BBC iPlayer has also become the streaming home for multiple international editions of the format, including versions from the United States, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
Originally created in the Netherlands under the title De Verraders, the format was developed by IDTV with the RTL Creative Unit and has since become a global television franchise, with All3Media International handling distribution worldwide.
