ITVX has picked up Australian crime drama ‘Savage River‘, a six-part thriller starring Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why, Cursed), with the atmospheric small-town mystery arriving on the streaming service this April.
Set in rural Victoria, ‘Savage River’ centres on Miki Anderson, who returns to her hometown after serving eight years in prison. Hoping to rebuild her life and leave the past behind, Miki quickly discovers that the community she once called home hasn’t forgotten anything. When a shocking murder rocks the quiet town, suspicion immediately falls back on her. Faced with the possibility of being blamed once again, Miki begins digging into the town’s long-buried secrets to clear her name, uncovering a web of prejudice, grudges, and hidden truths that run far deeper than anyone expected.
The series comes from Aquarius Films, the acclaimed production company behind Lion and Berlin Syndrome, and is directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse (The Dressmaker, Stateless). Behind the camera, the show also boasts some serious pedigree, including Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Don McAlpine (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet) and BAFTA-winning composer David Hirschfelder (Elizabeth, Shine), helping give the drama a distinctive cinematic feel despite its small-town setting.
At its core, ‘Savage River’ leans into that classic crime-thriller setup where everyone in town seems to know each other… and nobody is quite telling the whole truth. Miki’s return exposes old tensions and unresolved history within the community, with the series gradually peeling back the layers of what really happened in the past and how those secrets still shape the present.
Although it’s new to ITVX, ‘Savage River’ is not making its first appearance in the UK. The drama previously streamed on Paramount+ UK when it first aired in 2022, so this ITVX run effectively gives the series a new free streaming home and another chance to find an audience.
For fans of character-driven crime dramas set in tight-knit communities where suspicion spreads quickly and the past refuses to stay buried, ‘Savage River’ looks set to slot neatly into ITVX’s growing catalogue of international thrillers.
‘Savage River‘ premieres Sunday, 12th April 2026 on ITVX.
