The BBC and HBO have unveiled a new set of images from ‘Half Man’, the upcoming drama created by Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer, Against The Law). The six-part series is set to arrive on BBC iPlayer, BBC One and BBC Scotland in the UK this April, with HBO handling the release in the US, Latin America and Europe.
The series stars Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer) and Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers, Rocketman) as Ruben and Niall, two men bound together by a relationship closer than family. The newly released images also introduce Mitchell Robertson (Curfew, Mayflies) and Stuart Campbell (SAS Rogue Heroes, The Winter King), who portray the younger versions of Niall and Ruben.
The drama follows the pair across three decades. As teenagers in the 1980s, they become inseparable after tragedy brings them together. One is fierce and fiercely loyal, the other quieter and more withdrawn, but their bond forms the foundation of both their lives. Years later, when Ruben unexpectedly turns up at Niall’s wedding, something has clearly changed. Ruben appears unsettled and distant, and before long a violent incident erupts which sends the story spiralling back through their shared past.
Across thirty years, ‘Half Man’ explores brotherhood, trauma and the fragile emotional ties between men. The story examines how relationships formed in youth can shape entire lives, and how the deepest bonds can sometimes become the most volatile.
Also appearing in the series are Neve McIntosh (Tin Star, The Chemistry of Death) as Niall’s mother Lori, and Marianne McIvor (Screw, The Nest) as Ruben’s mother Maura. The wider cast includes Charlie De Melo (Rivals), Bilal Hasna (The Agency), Julie Cullen (Traces), Amy Manson (The Nevers), Anjli Mohindra (The Lazarus Project), Tim Downie (Outlander), Tom Andrews (Feel Good), Philippine Velge (The Serpent Queen), Stuart McQuarrie (The Rig), Sandy Batchelor (SAS Rogue Heroes), Piers Ewart (The Primrose Railway Children), Scot Greenan (T2 Trainspotting), along with newcomers Charlotte Blackwood, Calum Manchip and Kate Robson-Stuart.
‘Half Man’ is created, written and executive produced by Richard Gadd. Sophie Gardiner and Anna O’Malley serve as executive producers alongside Gaynor Holmes for the BBC and Gavin Smith for BBC Scotland. The series is directed by Alexandra Brodski and Eshref Reybrouck. Executive producers for Mam Tor Productions are Tally Garner and Morven Reid.
The drama is produced by Mam Tor Productions (a Banijay UK company) in association with Thistledown Pictures for BBC iPlayer, BBC One and BBC Scotland, with HBO co-producing. Banijay Rights handles international distribution outside of BBC and HBO territories, and the production is supported by Screen Scotland.
