U&DRAMA Brings Clive Owen’s ‘Monsieur Spade’ To The UK This May

by Dave Elliott

Monsieur Spade is finally heading to the UK, with UKTV confirming the stylish neo-noir drama will premiere on U&DRAMA this May, with all episodes also available as a box set on U from launch.

Set in 1963 in the South of France, ‘Monsieur Spade’ stars Clive Owen (Closer, Children of Men, The Knick) as the legendary detective Sam Spade, now long retired and living a quieter life in the small town of Bozouls. Of course, quiet never tends to last very long for men like Spade.

That peaceful existence is shattered when six nuns are brutally murdered at a local convent, dragging Spade back towards the sort of darkness he thought he’d left behind in San Francisco. As he begins to investigate, buried secrets start bubbling up, and the case takes an even stranger turn when it appears to connect to a mysterious child said to possess extraordinary powers.

The six-part series comes from Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit, Logan) and Tom Fontana (Oz, Borgia, City on a Hill), with Frank also directing. That creative pairing alone should tell you this is aiming for something a bit richer than a standard detective yarn, and from the sounds of it, ‘Monsieur Spade’ leans hard into atmosphere, mystery and old-school noir cool.

Alongside Owen, the cast includes Cara Bossom (Radioactive), Denis Ménochet (Inglourious Basterds), Louise Bourgoin (The Romanoffs), Chiara Mastroianni (On a Magical Night), Stanley Weber (Outlander), Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game), Jonathan Zaccaï (Robin Hood), Rebecca Root (The Queen’s Gambit), plus guest appearances from Alfre Woodard (Salem’s Lot, The Book of Clarence) and Dean Winters (John Wick, Lost Girls).

It also has that lovely setup of taking one of crime fiction’s most famous detectives and dropping him somewhere sun-drenched, elegant and supposedly peaceful, only for everything to go horribly wrong. Which, honestly, is exactly the kind of pitch that works.

Monsieur Spade does not yet have a premiere date but will air on U&DRAMA in the UK this May. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
