‘God of War‘ has added another major player to its growing cast, with Sonya Walger (For All Mankind, Lost) signing on for a recurring role as Freya in Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of the hit PlayStation game.
Freya is one of the key figures in the Norse-era God of War story, described here as a Vanir goddess and princess who wields powerful ancient magic. She is also Odin’s ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries, now living in exile in Midgard after the collapse of her marriage and her banishment from Vanaheim. In the games, she is one of the most layered characters in the story, carrying grief, anger and regret, so Walger feels like a very strong fit for the role.
The series is based on PlayStation’s mythology-themed action-adventure franchise and follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they set out to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife Faye. Along the way, the pair are pulled into a dangerous journey through a world of gods, monsters and old grudges, with Kratos trying to teach Atreus how to be a better god, while Atreus attempts to show his father how to be a better man.
Previously announced cast members include Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead) as Kratos, Callum Vinson (Chucky, Long Bright River) as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin (Homeland, The Princess Bride) as Odin, Ed Skrein (Deadpool, Rebel Moon) as Baldur, Max Parker (Vampire Academy, Emmerdale) as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severance, Somebody Somewhere) as Thor, Teresa Palmer (A Discovery of Witches, The Fall Guy) as Sif, Alastair Duncan (The Batman, Inside Man) as Mimir, Jeff Gulka (Lou, Alaska Daily) as Sindri, Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld, Watchmen) as Brok, Louis Cunningham (Masters of the Air, Disclaimer) as Modi, Ben Chapple (Willow, Roadkill) as Magni, Evelyn Miller (Foundation, The Last Kingdom) as Gna, and Island Austin (Home and Away, The Spiderwick Chronicles) as Thrud.
Behind the camera, God of War comes from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer, with Frederick E.O. Toye set to direct the first two episodes. The series has already landed a two-season order, which suggests Prime Video is treating this as one of its next big genre swings.
There is still no premiere date yet, but with production now underway in Vancouver, it is clearly moving at pace. For fans of the games, Freya was always going to be one of the most important casting decisions, so locking in Walger is another strong sign that the show is assembling the right pieces.
