Adult Swim has dropped the official trailer for ‘Rick and Morty‘ Season 9, and the gloriously chaotic animated hit is heading back to UK screens this May, with HBO Max UK picking up the latest run for viewers in the UK and Ireland.
That means ‘Rick and Morty’ is making the jump to HBO Max UK for its new season, following its US launch on Adult Swim. Judging by the trailer, fans can expect exactly the sort of interdimensional nonsense, family dysfunction, and deeply questionable decision-making the show has built its reputation on, with Beth and Summer battling furniture, Rick and Morty turning up to yoga, and Jerry still very much being Jerry.
Adult Swim’s official synopsis leans fully into the madness too: “‘Rick and Morty’ is back, baby! Season Nine is all certified bangers. No AI slop! Just Grade A organic slop, made by real humans with real human traits like back hair and cysts. Please watch, or we’ll have neglected our families for nothing.”
Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, added: “I know it’s my job to say that this show just keeps topping itself, but it also has the benefit of being true. It’s kind of scary what this show unit is doing season over season – just pouring an absurd amount of talent and brilliance into these episodes. From the first frame, you’re going to see great high-concept insanity with some of the best character writing ever done. Again, it’s my job to say that, but it’s also true.”
That probably tells you everything you need to know about the tone of ‘Rick and Morty’ at this point. Nearly a decade in, the show still seems perfectly happy being one of television’s strangest mainstream success stories, bouncing between absurd sci-fi concepts, bleak emotional turns, and jokes that often sound like they were written during a sleep-deprived sugar crash.
The series is executive produced by Dan Harmon and showrunner Scott Marder, with the voice cast including Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden, Sarah Chalke (Firefly Lane, Scrubs), Chris Parnell (30 Rock), and Spencer Grammer (Mr. Robinson).
There is also plenty more ‘Rick and Morty’ still to come beyond this run, with the show already renewed through Season 12, so the portal gun is not being put away anytime soon.
