Netflix Confirms ‘Extraction 3’ As Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba & Golshifteh Farahani Return

Netflix has officially confirmed ‘Extraction 3’, with Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani all returning for the next outing in the hit action franchise. Sam Hargrave is also back to direct, as Netflix and AGBO continue to build out the brutal, globe-trotting world of Tyler Rake.

The first two ‘Extraction’ films have been huge performers for Netflix, so it’s not exactly shocking to see the streamer loading up another mission for Tyler Rake, despite the small issue of him almost dying on a fairly regular basis. The franchise, based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks and a story by Parks and the Russo Brothers, has become one of Netflix’s biggest action brands, with both previous films landing on the streamer’s Most Popular English Films list.

Angela Russo-Otstot, Chief Creative Officer at AGBO, said: “It’s incredibly exciting to continue our partnership with Netflix as we further expand the Extraction universe. It is also our privilege to continue the creative collaboration with Sam Hargrave, Chris Hemsworth, and this outstanding team who have built a stellar action franchise that has proven itself a true standout for audiences around the globe.”

Plot details for ‘Extraction 3’ are being kept tightly under wraps for now, but given the franchise’s track record, it’s fair to expect more bone-crunching fight scenes, increasingly ridiculous stunts, and Tyler Rake once again finding himself in places that seem deeply bad for his long-term health.

Netflix is also clearly thinking bigger than just a third film. The streamer is expanding the ‘Extraction’ universe with new international stories, including the upcoming spin-off series Mercenary, led by Omar Sy (Lupin, The Intouchables). The series is set in the same world as ‘Extraction’ and follows a mercenary on a dangerous hostage rescue mission in Libya, where he finds himself trapped between rival factions, ruthless killers, and a whole lot of emotional baggage.

The eight-episode series comes from showrunner, writer and executive producer Glen Mazzara, and is being filmed in Ireland and Morocco. Louise Hooper (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Sandman) and Tim Southam (Foundation, ONE PIECE) each direct four episodes. Alongside Sy, the cast includes Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Dormer, Waleed Zuaiter, Ed Speleers, Sacha Dhawan, Ross McCall, Pip Torrens, Sam Woolf, Michael Zananiri, Riyad Sliman, Muhannad Ben Amor, Aaron Heffernan, Jojo Macari, Theo Ogundipe and Emma Appleton.

Mazzara said: “Mercenary is the biggest show I’ve ever done. It required an incredible amount of prep time. It was overwhelming to finally step on set and see the work of hundreds of people come together to bring this story to life. After our first take, I turned to … Hooper and said, ‘That’s it! That’s the show.’ It was a dream come true.”

He also said of star Sy: “Omar’s humanity and charm bring a warmth to a character trapped in impossible situations. He moves effortlessly between the many worlds of our show while always remaining an outsider. He is, without a doubt, the beating heart of our show.”

There is also the previously announced South Korean spin-off film ‘TYGO’, starring Don Lee (The Roundup franchise, Eternals, Train to Busan), Lee Jin-uk (Squid Game, Sweet Home) and Lalisa Manobal (The White Lotus), showing Netflix has no intention of letting this franchise sit quietly in a corner.

‘Extraction 3’ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Netflix in the UK.
