U&Drama has set a May UK premiere for ‘Monsieur Spade‘, the stylish new crime drama starring Clive Owen (A Murder at the End of the World) as the legendary detective Sam Spade.
Set in 1963 in the South of France, the series finds Spade long retired from the danger and grit of San Francisco, now living a quieter life in the small town of Bozouls. Of course, peaceful retirement does not tend to last very long in television drama, and things take a dark turn when six nuns are discovered murdered at a local convent.
As Sam begins to help investigate, buried secrets start rising to the surface, along with troubling suggestions that the past he thought he had left behind may not be done with him just yet. The case also leads him toward a mysterious child rumoured to possess extraordinary powers, with multiple forces trying to track the boy down. That leaves ‘Monsieur Spade’ balancing classic detective drama with something a little stranger and more unsettling underneath.
The opening episode sees Spade arriving in Bozouls, where a brief visit turns into something much more permanent after he falls for a local vineyard owner. Years later, he is living quietly as a widower and retiree, until the return of an old adversary changes everything.
With Clive Owen stepping into the role of one of fiction’s most iconic detectives, ‘Monsieur Spade’ looks like it could be a classy, atmospheric addition to the crime drama line-up, with a sun-drenched setting that feels a long way from the smoky streets usually associated with Sam Spade.
‘Monsieur Spade‘ premieres Saturday, 9th May 2026 at 9pm on U&Drama, with all episodes available as a box set on U from launch.
