MGM+ has unveiled the teaser trailer for upcoming original crime drama ‘The Westies’, a gritty new eight-episode series from Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato.
Set in New York City in the early 1980s, ‘The Westies’ centres on the infamously violent Irish gang of the same name, operating out of Hell’s Kitchen at a moment when the construction of the Jacob Javits Convention Center promises a major financial payday. Despite being massively outnumbered by the Five Families of the Italian Mafia, the Westies’ reputation for brutality and cunning has given them enough leverage to carve out their own piece of the action.
That uneasy arrangement is beginning to crack. As the old-school leadership tries to maintain a fragile détente with the Mafia, a younger, more reckless generation starts pushing for control, threatening to ignite a gang war just as the FBI’s investigation into organised crime begins tightening around everyone involved. So, basically, New York real estate, family loyalty, gang politics, and several people making extremely poor life choices in excellent coats.
J.K. Simmons (Counterpart) stars as Eamonn Sweeney, leading an ensemble cast which includes Titus Welliver (Bosch), Tom Brittney (Grantchester), Stanley Morgan (I Used To Be Famous), Sarah Bolger (Mayans M.C.), and Jessica Frances Dukes (Ozark).
The series is created and executive produced by Chris Brancato, alongside co-creator Michael Panes. It marks Brancato’s third collaboration with MGM+, following ‘Godfather of Harlem’ and ‘Hotel Cocaine’. Brancato is also known for co-creating Netflix’s ‘Narcos’, as well as writing and producing across shows such as The X-Files, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Hannibal.
MGM+ International says the drama underlines its ongoing commitment to premium original storytelling, with the series set to launch across multiple territories including the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia.
