ITV has released a first look at ‘The Dark‘, a chilling new six-part serial killer mystery starring Laura Donnelly (The Nevers, Sugar) and Mark Rowley (Trigger Point, Karen Pirie), which is coming to ITV, STV, ITVX and STV Player this summer.
Adapted from From the Shadows, the debut novel by GR Halliday, the drama follows DI Monica Kennedy, played by Donnelly, as she is drawn into a tense and deeply unsettling investigation across the Scottish countryside. Alongside her new partner, DC Connor Crawford, played by Rowley, Monica finds herself hunting a masked killer whose crimes suggest something far more disturbing is unfolding in the rural community.
The first-look images introduce Monica as she begins a dangerous cat-and-mouse pursuit, while also offering a glimpse at Helen Baxendale (Cold Feet, Noughts + Crosses) as Bethany Morgan, a distraught mother pushed to breaking point when Monica appears at her door with a case linked to her missing son. The images also tease the show’s killer, masked, dangerous, and seemingly ready to strike again.
When the body of a young man is discovered eerily staged in the idyllic Scottish wilderness, Monica fears it could be the start of a terrifying campaign. As paranoia spreads, suspicions rise, and long-buried secrets begin to surface, the locals are forced to confront the possibility that a serial killer is hiding among them.
For Monica, the case becomes increasingly personal. Experienced in dealing with the darkest corners of humanity, she quickly becomes locked into a psychological game with a cunning murderer. But as her own past begins to resurface, Monica’s judgement starts to falter, raising the question of whether her own actions may become the greatest danger to herself and her family.
‘The Dark’ has been adapted for television by Matt Hartley and is produced by Poison Pen Studios, part of ITV Studios. Ben Stephenson, Preethi Mavahalli, Luke Woellhaf and Fern McCauley serve as executive producers alongside Hartley. Matt Brown produces, with Lena Rae and Nessah Muthy also writing on the series. Gilles Bannier is lead director and executive producer.
