Apple TV is heading into the messy intersection of sex, religion and murder, with Julia Garner (Ozark, Weapons) set to star in and executive produce ‘Guilty Creatures’, a new thriller based on the acclaimed true-crime book by Mikita Brottman.
The series is adapted from Brottman’s Guilty Creatures: Sex, God, and Murder in Tallahassee, Florida, and explores a torrid romance between two young, adulterous but deeply religious lovers that ultimately leads to murder.
Rather than simply focusing on the crime itself, ‘Guilty Creatures’ will delve into the psychology of the couple and the emotional toll of living as killers for 18 years. Set against the distinctly sweaty backdrop of the Florida Panhandle, the story promises sex, murder, religion and a lot of very bad decisions.
Garner will executive produce through her Alma Margo production company, with Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Your Friends & Neighbors, Pam & Tommy) set to direct and executive produce. The pair previously worked together on the Apple TV drama ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’, in which Garner joined the cast for Season 2.
Stuart Zicherman (The Shrink Next Door, Sweetbitter, The Americans) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Sarah DeLappe (Bodies Bodies Bodies) is adapting the book for television and also executive producing.
The series is produced by Tomorrow Studios, the company behind Netflix’s live-action ‘ONE PIECE’ and Apple TV’s ‘Physical’. Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements and Alissa Bachner executive produce through Tomorrow Studios, alongside Garner through Alma Margo. Gillespie and Annie Marter executive produce through Fortunate Jack Productions, with author Mikita Brottman also serving as an executive producer.
