Steve Buscemi Joins FX’s ‘Far Cry’ Anthology Series Alongside Rob Mac & Lizzy Caplan

by Dave Elliott

Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire, Fargo) is heading into Ubisoft’s dangerous open worlds after joining FX’s upcoming Far Cry anthology series.

Buscemi joins previously announced stars Rob Mac (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mythic Quest) and Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex, Fleishman Is in Trouble). Details surrounding his character, the first season’s setting and exactly which corner of the gaming franchise the series will explore are all being kept under wraps.

The adaptation will follow the structure of Ubisoft’s games, with each season telling a standalone story in a new location with a different cast of characters. That should give the series considerably more freedom than a conventional video game adaptation, allowing it to borrow the franchise’s tone and ideas without necessarily recreating one particular title.

The ‘Far Cry’ games generally throw players into vast, hostile open worlds ruled by memorable and frequently unhinged antagonists. Across the franchise, players have faced tropical mercenaries, Himalayan dictators, American cult leaders and more than a few people who probably should not have been trusted with access to heavy weaponry.

That makes Steve Buscemi a rather wonderful addition. He could comfortably play the reluctant hero, the unsettling villain or the suspiciously friendly local who absolutely knows more than he is telling anyone.

Buscemi has built a career playing unique and unpredictable characters, with film credits including Reservoir Dogs, The Big Lebowski, The Death of Stalin and, appropriately enough, Fargo. His television work includes Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos, Miracle Workers and the second season of Netflix’s Wednesday.

Noah Hawley and Rob Mac created the series and will executive produce. Hawley already has plenty of anthology experience as the creator of FX’s Fargo, alongside developing Legion and Alien: Earth. Mac created and stars in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, co-created Apple TV’s gaming comedy Mythic Quest and executive produces Welcome to Wrexham.

The series is also executive produced by Simon Emanuel, Emilia Serrano for 26 Keys, Nicholas Frenkel for 3 Arts, Monica Macer, Peter Calloway, John Campisi, Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin and Austin Dill for Ubisoft Film & Television. FX Productions will produce.

No premiere date has been announced for ‘Far Cry’. The series is expected to stream on Disney+ in the UK. If I want to keep track of this or any other shows, I can add them via our Never Miss system, and I’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
