William Jackson Harper Joins Elisabeth Moss In Hulu Legal Drama ‘Conviction’

by Dave Elliott

William Jackson Harper (The Good Place, The Morning Show) has joined Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale, Mad Men) in Hulu’s upcoming legal drama Conviction.

Harper will appear as a series regular, although details about his character are currently being kept under wraps. He joins a cast that also includes Jimmi Simpson (Westworld, Dark Matter), Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy, Rome), Sebastian De Souza (The Great, Skins), Adam Godley (The Great, Succession), Linda Emond (The Gilded Age, Only Murders in the Building) and Ella Anderson (Henry Danger, The Glass Castle).

The series follows Neve Harper, played by Moss, a confident criminal defence attorney who finally lands the sort of high-profile murder case that could transform her career. A husband stands accused of killing his wife by setting their home on fire, giving Neve the opportunity to secure a headline-grabbing acquittal.

Things become considerably messier when a mysterious stranger begins blackmailing her. Neve is forced to compromise her legal, moral and ethical obligations to win the case, or risk having her own dark secrets exposed.

So, along with defending an alleged murderer, she will also be dealing with blackmail, professional misconduct and whatever particularly unpleasant skeletons she has tucked away in the cupboard. Probably not the ideal time for a surprise ethics review.

‘Conviction’ is written by David Shore, the creator of House and The Good Doctor, and is based on the 2023 novel of the same name by Jack Jordan. The series is produced by 20th Television for Hulu.

Shore executive produces alongside Erin Gunn through Shore Z Productions. Moss and Lindsey McManus executive produce through Love & Squalor Pictures, with Warren Littlefield, Ann Johnson and Lisa Harrison representing The Littlefield Company. Bert Salke executive produces through Co-Lab21, alongside Jordan.

Harper received an Emmy nomination in 2020 for his performance as Chidi Anagonye in The Good Place, before earning a Tony nomination in 2024 for starring opposite Steve Carell (The Office, The Morning Show) in Uncle Vanya.

His recent television work includes the fourth season of The Morning Show, while his film credits include Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. He will next star opposite Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Fargo) in MGM+ drama American Hostage.

Harper has also completed production on the FX limited thriller Cry Wolf, alongside Olivia Colman (The Crown, The Favourite), and the independent film The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd, directed by Tim Blake Nelson.

Conviction does not yet have a premiere date on Hulu in the USA. As Hulu content now sits within Disney+ internationally, the series should also appear on Disney+ in the UK, although that has not yet been formally confirmed.
