Production is underway on ‘Robin Hood’ Season 2, with James Purefoy (Rome, The Following), Colin O’Donoghue (Once Upon a Time, The Right Stuff) and Luke Roberts (Black Sails, Ransom) joining MGM+’s gritty reinvention of the legendary outlaw story.
The second season is currently filming in Belgrade, Serbia, and will once again be available to MGM+ viewers in the UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Purefoy joins the cast as King Henry, the formidable monarch whose ruthless vision for England sets the new season’s events in motion. O’Donoghue plays his eldest son, Prince Richard, the rightful heir whose fate threatens to plunge the kingdom into civil war.
Roberts takes the role of Amaury D’Montfort, an ambitious Norman nobleman whose political aspirations place him at the centre of Nottingham’s growing power struggle.
Their arrival should significantly expand the royal and political side of ‘Robin Hood’, as Rob and his allies are forced to navigate shifting loyalties, dangerous new enemies and a power struggle that now reaches all the way to the throne.
The casting of Henry and Richard is particularly interesting given the unusual historical setting chosen for the MGM+ drama. Most versions of the Robin Hood legend take place during Richard the Lionheart’s absence from England, with Prince John acting as the villainous ruler back home. This series instead moved the story several decades earlier, setting its first season during the reign of Henry II.
That change allowed creators John Glenn and Jonathan English to explore the aftermath of the Norman Conquest, the resentment of the Saxon population and the imprisonment of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine after her rebellion against Henry.
It also gave the familiar legend a much broader political canvas. Rebellion was not limited to Rob firing arrows from the forest. Marian attempted to change the system from within, Eleanor fought through royal politics, and the outlaws struggled against laws designed to keep England’s Saxon population under Norman control.
The first season starred Jack Patten (The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim) as Rob of Locksley, a forester’s son gradually transformed into the legendary outlaw after his life was destroyed by injustice. Lauren McQueen (The Violators, Ordinary Lies) played Marian, a Norman noblewoman fighting many of the same battles from inside the establishment.
The ensemble also included Sean Bean (Game of Thrones, Time) as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Connie Nielsen (Gladiator, Wonder Woman) as Eleanor of Aquitaine and Angus Castle-Doughty (Hollyoaks, Shadow and Bone) as Friar Tuck.
Rather than tights, trumpets and cheerful woodland adventures, ‘Robin Hood’ delivered a world of mud, blood, religious tension and political manoeuvring. The result was a grounded and thoughtful take on the legend, one which explored empire, class and the beginnings of English identity alongside the arrows and sword fights.
Season 2 now looks set to push those themes even further. Henry’s presence brings royal authority directly into the conflict, while Richard’s uncertain future could destabilise the entire kingdom. Meanwhile, Amaury D’Montfort sounds like precisely the sort of ambitious nobleman who will happily exploit every crack in Nottingham’s political foundations.
‘Robin Hood’ is produced by Lionsgate Television. Showrunner John Glenn, director Jonathan English and Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman serve as executive producers.
‘Robin Hood’ Season 2 will premiere on MGM+ in the UK, with further details to be announced.
