Disney+ has released the first images from Season 6 of ‘Only Murders in the Building‘, and Charles, Oliver and Mabel are packing their bags. For the first time in the Emmy Award-winning comedy’s history, the crime-solving trio are leaving New York City behind and heading across the Atlantic to London this December.
The new season is being promoted as ‘Only Murders in London’, which is certainly an appropriate title given that the Arconia has been swapped for the home of the cosy murder mystery.
And no, they’re not just popping over for a spot of sightseeing and an overpriced cup of tea.
The new mystery begins when Cinda Canning becomes the trio’s latest victim, with her fate drawing them to London to hunt down her killer. Charles, Oliver and Mabel must navigate a fresh collection of suspicious and particularly English-eccentric characters as they attempt to solve their hardest case yet.
There is also a rather personal element to the investigation. Cinda’s podcast was the thing that originally inspired the trio to launch their own true crime adventures, so they’ll now be following in the footsteps of the woman who started it all for them, while hopefully avoiding ending their story in quite the same way.
Season 6 sees Steve Martin (The Jerk), Martin Short (Father of the Bride) and Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place) return as Charles, Oliver and Mabel, alongside Tina Fey (30 Rock) as Cinda Canning.
Disney’s latest announcement also specifically highlights Olivia Colman (The Crown), Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada), David Tennant (Doctor Who), Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton) and Martin Freeman (Sherlock) as special guest stars.
And Disney’s “and more” is doing some fairly heroic work. The wider reported guest cast also includes Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous), Simone Ashley (Bridgerton), Sean Teale (The Gifted), Amar Chadha-Patel (Willow), Rhea Norwood (Heartstopper), Lesley Nicol (Downton Abbey), Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous), Matthew Beard (Vienna Blood), Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters), Geri Halliwell-Horner (Gran Turismo), Jamie Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats), Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts), Derek Jacobi (Vicious), Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who), Jim Broadbent (Paddington), Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd), Adrian Lukis (The Crown), Kathryn Hunter (Andor) and Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who).
That also leaves Season 6 with an amusingly high concentration of Time Lords. David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker and Peter Capaldi have all played the Doctor, meaning three former Doctors are appearing in the same murder mystery. If Charles, Oliver and Mabel get stuck, somebody should at least have a sonic screwdriver lying around.
Moving the action to London should give ‘Only Murders in the Building’ plenty of opportunity to play with the conventions of the classic British murder mystery. And with the season adopting the ‘Only Murders in London’ moniker, it sounds as though the change of scenery is going to be rather more than a brief holiday for the trio.
The series comes from co-creators Steve Martin and John Hoffman, with Hoffman, Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Dan Fogelman, Jess Rosenthal, Ben Smith, Jennifer Crittenden and Gabrielle Allan serving as executive producers for Season 6.
