Sky is adding some wonderfully unlikely espionage to its September schedule, picking up New Zealand comedy ‘New Zealand Spy‘ for its UK premiere on Sky One and NOW.
The comedy centres around the New Zealand Intelligence Agency, which finds itself in need of some fresh blood. Obviously, the best way to recruit highly trained secret agents is to place an advert in the newspaper. Unfortunately, only three people respond, and they are not exactly the elite operatives the agency may have been hoping for.
Nevertheless, when you have three applicants and three vacancies, you work with what you’ve got. The mismatched trio are thrown headfirst into the murky world of espionage, where they have to contend with betrayal, romance and increasingly ridiculous situations as they attempt to keep their country safe.
‘New Zealand Spy’ takes the familiar world of secret agents, covert operations and international intrigue, then hands it over to three people who probably shouldn’t be trusted with any of those things. Rather than a collection of ultra-slick James Bond types, Sky viewers can expect a somewhat less polished approach to intelligence work.
It’s a wonderfully daft setup for a spy comedy. After all, there are presumably more rigorous recruitment processes available to an intelligence agency than sticking an advert between the used cars and local plumbing services, but where would be the fun in that?
Sky has picked up the series rather quietly, with ‘New Zealand Spy’ now appearing as part of its September line-up. If you’re in the mood for espionage with considerably more fumbling than your average spy thriller, this looks like one to check out.
‘New Zealand Spy‘ Season 1 premieres Friday, 4th September 2026 on Sky One and NOW.
