Prime Video has dropped the official trailer for the new era of ‘The Grand Tour‘, giving us the best look yet at Francis Bourgeois, James Engelsman and Thomas Holland taking over from Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May when the motoring series returns this September.
And, importantly, it looks like they have not tried to reinvent the wheel. The trailer has the familiar mixture of very expensive machinery, very cheap rubbish, ridiculous challenges, gorgeous locations, mild peril and presenters doing things which almost certainly seemed like a better idea in the production meeting. In other words, this is still very much ‘The Grand Tour’, just with three new people making the questionable decisions.
Bourgeois opens the trailer with, “Welcome to our first grand tour”, before the footage launches into a rapid tour of what the six-part series has planned. That includes sneaking across Colorado in Japanese microcars, exploring Malaysia’s car culture while finding out just how cheaply you can buy a sports car before it explodes, and taking track cars across the Angolan desert, because apparently nobody involved has learned anything from the previous six seasons.
There is also some rather more serious metal on display. The trio head to California to play with the Ford Mustang GTD, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and the frankly ridiculous Hennessey Venom F5 Revolution Evolution, with fighter jets thrown into the mix for good measure. A Pagani hypercar also appears, as does F1 World Champion Jenson Button, while another challenge involves trying to get something onto the head of Alex Albon as quickly as possible. Normal motoring journalism, then.
For those wondering whether the new presenters have the right credentials, Engelsman and Holland are the pair behind hugely popular YouTube motoring channel Throttle House, where they have spent years mixing proper car knowledge with comedy and increasingly elaborate films. Bourgeois is best known for becoming the internet’s most enthusiastic trainspotter, but he is also a qualified mechanical engineer who completed a four-year internship with Rolls-Royce. It is an odd combination on paper, but that is probably the point.
There is also some reassurance for anyone suffering separation anxiety from the old trio. Clarkson, Hammond and May are all set to make guest appearances during the new run, so Prime Video is not pretending their long-running motoring partnership never happened. The bigger test will be whether the new three can develop their own chemistry rather than simply becoming younger copies of the people they replaced.
Of course, there is another reason this reboot has a decent shot. ‘Top Gear’ is still off air after a filming crash came frighteningly close to killing another of its presenters. Freddie Flintoff suffered serious injuries in the December 2022 accident and later said, “I genuinely should not be here with what happened”. BBC Studios was still saying in May this year that there was “no update at this time” on the TV show’s return. There are fresh reports that the BBC may be looking at reviving it, but nothing has been officially announced.
So, right now, if you want a big-budget motoring show where people cross deserts in inappropriate cars, race military hardware, buy things that immediately break and occasionally end up in boats for reasons nobody can adequately explain, ‘The Grand Tour’ is basically the only game in town. And judging by this trailer, Prime Video appears to understand exactly what people want from it.
