Get ready for some Bonfire Night espionage, as Netflix has quietly locked in a November return for ‘Black Doves‘ Season 2, bringing Keira Knightley (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice) and Ben Whishaw (This Is Going to Hurt, Paddington) back into the wonderfully messy world of spies, assassins and extremely questionable career choices.

The date was revealed during Netflix’s UK showcase at the Edinburgh TV Festival, where attendees were also reportedly shown an exclusive first-look clip from the new season. That footage has yet to make its way online, but with the series returning this autumn, a public teaser hopefully shouldn’t be too far away.

Created by Joe Barton, ‘Black Doves’ follows Helen Webb, played by Keira Knightley, a wife and mother who also happens to be secretly passing government secrets to the covert Black Doves organisation. Unfortunately for Helen, her husband Wallace, played by Andrew Buchan (Broadchurch, The Crown), is now preparing to become Prime Minister, making the whole “secretly betraying the nation” side of her life somewhat more complicated.

Season 2 picks up in the fallout from the first season, with Helen continuing to operate for the Black Doves while trying to keep her increasingly dangerous double life from collapsing around her.

Her handler Mrs. Reed, played by Sarah Lancashire (Happy Valley, Last Tango in Halifax), also finds herself under pressure when a ruthless plot emerges to undermine her position within the organisation. That brings Helen back together with her best friend Sam, played by Ben Whishaw, whose fortunes have taken something of a downturn. He’s been spending his time drinking lonely pints in Soho bars and accepting low-level hits before being dragged back into Helen’s orbit.

As Helen and Sam begin looking for answers, loyalties come under pressure and the pair once again find themselves fighting to protect the people they care about, while surrounded by people for whom murder tends to be a perfectly reasonable problem-solving technique.

The returning cast also includes Kathryn Hunter (Poor Things, The Tragedy of Macbeth), Ella Lily Hyland (Fifteen-Love), Gabrielle Creevy (In My Skin), Agnes O’Casey (Ridley Road) and Molly Chesworth.

Season 2 is also expanding the spy roster with a sizeable collection of new faces. Ambika Mod (One Day) joins as Laila, an acerbic and anarchic Black Doves agent sent to assist Helen on a mission, while Neve Campbell (Scream, The Lincoln Lawyer) plays Cecile Mason.

Also joining are Babou Ceesay (Alien: Earth) as Mr. Conteh, a Black Doves executive whose motivations may not be entirely trustworthy, Sam Riley (Firebrand) as Patrick, an emissary from a mysterious organisation who offers Sam a potential lifeline, Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049) as Katia Chernov, Goran Kostic (Canary Black) as Alexi Chernov, and Samuel Barnett (Lee) as Jerry.

Julian Farino (Giri/Haji) and Kieron Hawkes (Red Eye) are directing episodes of the new season.

The first season of ‘Black Doves’ arrived in December 2024 and proved a major hit for Netflix, mixing political conspiracy, brutal action and dark comedy with the friendship between Helen and Sam at its heart. Netflix had enough faith in the series to commission Season 2 before the first batch of episodes had even premiered.

Anne Mensah, Vice President of Content at Netflix UK, previously said: “This is what happens when best-in-class writing meets best-in-class directing and extraordinary acting in a dark alley with guns and champagne. We couldn’t be more thrilled, and we know the Black Doves fandom is waiting!”

And given that Season 2 arrives on Bonfire Night in the UK, Netflix really couldn’t have picked a more appropriate evening for Helen and Sam to start setting things on fire again.
