The BBC has ordered a second series of hit comedy ‘Ann Droid‘, after the Diane Morgan and Sue Johnston series proved to be one of the broadcaster’s biggest new scripted launches of the year.
The comedy attracted 7.6 million viewers across its first 28 days for episode one, making it the BBC’s second biggest new scripted launch of 2026 so far, behind ‘Small Prophets’. That first episode has continued to grow since then, reaching 8.1 million viewers to date.
The show also proved particularly popular with younger viewers, becoming the biggest launch of a new BBC series amongst 16 to 34-year-olds across all genres since ‘The Celebrity Traitors’.
Created by Diane Morgan (Mandy, Cunk) and co-written by Morgan and Sarah Kendall (Frayed, The Other One), ‘Ann Droid’ stars Sue Johnston (True Love, The Royle Family), Morgan, and Paul Ready (Motherland).
The six-part second series was announced during the Spotlight on the BBC session at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
“The response to Ann Droid has been so incredible. We’re all totally blown away. I’m really looking forward to not blinking, needing physio and hearing Cotton Eye Joe on repeat,” said Morgan.
Johnston added: “I am so unbelievably happy that we are to do another series! Great script, great cast, great crew. The reaction from the public has been wonderful. Even my doctor called me Sue, Sue, Sue this morning! Everyone has been asking if there will be more and now we can tell them! Yippee.”
The first series, which launched in July on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, followed Sue, played by Johnston, who is given a second-hand Ann Droid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot by her son Michael, played by Ready.
Initially reluctant to make use of the robot, named Linda and played by Morgan, Sue gradually develops an unlikely friendship with her new mechanical companion as she navigates later life and Linda repeatedly deploys her memorable “Sue, Sue, Sue” catchphrase.
Shane Allen, executive producer for Boffola Pictures, commented: “We marvel at our BBC robot overlords and their impeccable decision making. Diane and Sue are comedy dynamite, fronting a superb cast. We’re all overwhelmed by how much the audience has taken the show to their hearts. As a warning to critics and begrudgers, any backlash against series 2 will be met by Linda’s inbuilt tasers.”

‘Ann Droid’ is produced by Boffola Pictures and Witchcraft Industries for BBC iPlayer and BBC One. Morgan and Sarah Kendall return as writers, with Shane Allen, Morgan and Pippa Brown serving as executive producers. Brown also serves as series producer, while Seb Barwell and Navi Lamba are the commissioning editors for the BBC.
BBC Studios, which has a minority investment stake in Boffola Pictures, will handle global sales.
