The BBC has released the official trailer and artwork for the fourth series of its BAFTA and RTS award-winning Belfast police drama ‘Blue Lights‘, as Grace, Tommy and Annie prepare to face their toughest challenge yet.
The new six-part run picks up three years into the trio’s careers as response officers. Grace Ellis, Tommy Foster and Annie Conlon are now experienced cops, but the pressure of policing Belfast is pushing all three close to their limits as a new threat emerges on the streets which the police are struggling to control.
At the same time, the murder trial of Gerry Cliff threatens to drag some dangerous secrets into the light. The case exposes something long buried, creating problems not only inside the police but across the city’s criminal underworld. With major decisions about their futures looming, Grace, Tommy and Annie are forced to confront some uncomfortable truths about the job and themselves.
The trailer certainly suggests ‘Blue Lights’ is not planning to make life any easier for them this time around, with plenty of tension both on the streets and within the force.
Siân Brooke (Sherlock, Trying) returns as Grace Ellis, alongside Martin McCann (Trespasses, Hostage) as Stevie Neil, Katherine Devlin (The Day of the Jackal, Vikings) as Annie Conlon and Nathan Braniff as Tommy Foster.
Also returning are Joanne Crawford (Outlander: Blood of My Blood) as Chief Inspector Helen McNally, Andi Osho (The Sandman, I May Destroy You) as Sandra Cliff, Frank Blake (Say Nothing, Normal People) as Shane Bradley, Abigail McGibbon (Ballywalter, The Power of Parker) as Tina McIntyre, Dearbháile McKinney as Aisling Byrne, Neil Keery (How To Get To Heaven From Belfast) as Sergeant Lawrence McCloskey and Andrea Irvine (Call The Midwife) as Chief Superintendent Nicola Robinson.
There are also some familiar faces returning from earlier in the drama. Richard Dormer (The Day of the Jackal, Game of Thrones) reprises his role as Gerry Cliff in a special one-off episode, with Cathy Tyson (Dune: Prophecy, Black Ops) back as private members club owner Dana Morgan, Hannah McClean (Malpractice) as solicitor Jen Robinson, Jonathan Harden (The Rainmaker, Time) as Inspector Jonty Johnston and Michael Smiley (Bad Sisters, Censor) as C3 intelligence officer Paul Colly Collins.
Series 4 is again created and written by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, who executive produce alongside Stephen Wright and Louise Gallagher. Brendan Mullin produces the new run, with Angela Griffin directing episodes one to three and Sam O’Mahony directing episodes four to six.
The series is produced by Two Cities Television and co-produced by Gallagher Films for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with support from Northern Ireland Screen. BBC Studios handles global sales, with ‘Blue Lights’ now having been sold into more than 160 territories.
The BBC has not yet announced an exact premiere date for the new series.
