Netflix has confirmed ‘Lupin‘ Part 4 will arrive this October, with Omar Sy (The Intouchables) returning as gentleman thief Assane Diop and a batch of first-look images offering an early peek at his next adventure.
Production on ‘Lupin’ Part 4 has been underway since May, and the new run will consist of eight episodes, all dropping together on Netflix. The French mystery thriller remains one of Netflix’s biggest non-English language hits, following Assane as he takes inspiration from Maurice Leblanc’s legendary gentleman thief Arsène Lupin while pulling off increasingly elaborate schemes of his own.
When we last saw Assane, things had taken a rather less glamorous turn. After stealing the Black Pearl, faking his own death and trying to secure a safer life for Claire, Raoul, his mother and Benjamin, he ultimately turned himself in to the police. Part 3 ended with him behind bars, albeit with a full collection of Arsène Lupin books to keep him occupied.
The newly released images suggest prison will indeed be part of the story when ‘Lupin’ returns, alongside the sort of Parisian locations, disguises and high-stakes plotting that have become the show’s trademark. One shot also puts the Eiffel Tower right in the middle of the action, so Assane’s incarceration may not keep him contained for too long.
Sy, who also serves as one of the show’s showrunners, says returning to the role continues to be a joy.
“I often say that Lupin is an extraordinary plaything,” Sy told Netflix. “I find great joy in it every time.”
Behind the scenes, ‘Lupin’ is created by George Kay in collaboration with François Uzan, with the participation of Marie Roussin, Florent Meyer and Tigran Rosine. Sy and Louis Leterrier serve as showrunners, with Gaumont producing in collaboration with Carrousel Studios.
After three parts packed with elaborate cons, disguises, impossible escapes and Assane generally being several steps ahead of everyone else, having him start Part 4 from inside a prison cell certainly gives him a new challenge. Although, given his track record, we’d probably avoid betting on him staying there for all eight episodes.
