HBO has released a new trailer for ‘Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone‘, giving us our best look yet at the new TV adaptation as Harry begins his first year at Hogwarts this Christmas on HBO Max in the UK.
Following the first teaser back in March, this latest footage dives much deeper into life at Hogwarts, with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry pleading with the Sorting Hat to keep him out of Slytherin, taking his first lessons, discovering Quidditch and, naturally, finding himself in considerably more mortal danger than you’d usually expect from an eleven-year-old’s first term at school.
There is plenty here for fans of the books to pick apart. We get Herbology classes, Harry chasing the Golden Snitch on his Nimbus 2000, the trio facing the troll, an encounter with Fluffy, the Invisibility Cloak, the Mirror of Erised and a glimpse of Ron’s rather important game of wizard chess.
The longer format also looks set to give the adaptation room to explore material which never made it into the films, along with some entirely new scenes. The trailer shows Hermione travelling through the Hogwarts Express before meeting Harry and Ron, Ron receiving his Hogwarts letter at The Burrow, and more of the students simply living, learning and getting to know each other at Hogwarts.
Alongside McLaughlin, newcomers Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout play Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley respectively.
The Hogwarts staff are filled out by Janet McTeer (Ozark) as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) as Professor Severus Snape, John Lithgow (Dexter) as Albus Dumbledore, and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) as Rubeus Hagrid.
The new trailer gives us a much better look at McGonagall and Snape in particular, along with more of Dumbledore and Hagrid, as HBO continues to show how its version of Hogwarts will differ from the much-loved film adaptations.
And HBO is already looking beyond Harry’s first year. Season 2 has previously been announced, with Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) now set to play Professor Gilderoy Lockhart. He replaces Nicholas Hoult (The Great), who dropped out of the role due to scheduling conflicts.
The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman also serve as executive producers.
