Sir David Suchet (Poirot) is swapping the little grey cells for the suspect list this Christmas, as the BBC has announced a festive special of ‘Ludwig‘, starring David Mitchell (Peep Show) and Anna Maxwell Martin (Line of Duty).
The one-hour special takes the Taylors away from their usual surroundings and drops them into a suitably festive locked-room mystery. John, Lucy and Henry arrive at a remote Christmas-themed hotel for what should be a much-needed break, only for a sudden blackout to plunge the guests into murder, mystery and rather less relaxing festive cheer.
With a blizzard cutting the hotel off from the outside world, everyone is trapped inside with a killer in their midst. John is reluctantly pulled into one of his strangest puzzles yet, as the Taylors race to solve the crime before Christmas.
The big guest star is Sir David Suchet (Poirot), who gets to turn the tables on his most famous screen role by playing a murder suspect rather than the detective. He joins a guest cast which also includes Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), Joe Wilkinson (After Life), Cathy Tyson (Boiling Point), Alexandra Roach (Utopia) and Kiell Smith-Bynoe (Ghosts).
On working with Suchet, David Mitchell (Peep Show) said: “I have long been a huge admirer of Sir David Suchet’s work and have watched every episode of Poirot several times, so it was a dream come true for me when he agreed to appear in the Ludwig Christmas Special. He was an absolute joy to work and spend time with – funny, interesting and generous – and his performance in the programme is wonderful.”
Sir David Suchet (Poirot) added: “It was an absolute pleasure to work alongside David Mitchell and the wonderful ensemble cast. It made quite the refreshing change to be playing a suspect rather than the detective, and to sit comfortably in my armchair while David delivered the denouement. I had a thoroughly enjoyable time.”
The Christmas episode is written by series creator Mark Brotherhood and directed by Chris Foggin. It is produced by Big Talk Studios in association with That Mitchell And Webb Company, in co-production with BritBox and ZDF.
The special arrives while ‘Ludwig’ Series 2 is currently airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with Series 3 already in production. The Christmas episode forms part of the Series 2 commission.
‘Ludwig‘ Christmas Special premieres this Christmas on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
