The boys are back, and somehow Simon’s little yellow Fiat may have survived too. Netflix has officially announced production is now underway in the UK on ‘The Inbetweeners 3’, reuniting the original foursome more than a decade after their last big-screen outing.
Simon Bird (Friday Night Dinner), James Buckley (White Gold), Blake Harrison (Kate & Koji) and Joe Thomas (Fresh Meat) are all returning as Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland and Simon Cooper respectively, continuing the story of the spectacularly awkward friends who first stumbled onto our screens back in 2008.
Netflix marked the start of filming with a suitably understated announcement video, featuring the gang reunited around Simon’s famous yellow Fiat Cinquecento.
Original creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are also back, this time writing and directing ‘The Inbetweeners 3’. The pair said: “It’s been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we’re going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans”
The original ‘The Inbetweeners’ ran for three series from 2008 to 2010, following suburban teenager Will McKenzie and his friends Simon Cooper, Neil Sutherland and Jay Cartwright as they attempted to survive school, friendship, hormones and a seemingly endless run of spectacularly embarrassing situations.
After the series wrapped, the boys made the jump to the big screen with ‘The Inbetweeners Movie’ in 2011 and ‘The Inbetweeners 2’ in 2014. Both were huge hits, with the first setting a record at the time for the biggest opening weekend for a UK comedy, while the sequel also broke box office records.
Claire Jones produces the new film alongside Banijay’s Patrick Holland and Fudge Park Productions’ Mark Lesbirel. Caroline Levy, Caroline Leddy, Phil Gilbert, Suzanne Knight, Tom Jordan, Farhana Bhula, Iain Morris and Damon Beesley serve as executive producers.
As for what Will, Simon, Jay and Neil are actually doing all these years later, Netflix is keeping quiet for now. Given their track record, though, it seems unlikely adulthood has made them any better at navigating life.
‘The Inbetweeners 3’ is currently filming in the UK for Netflix. No premiere date has been announced.
If I want to keep track of this or any other shows, I can add them via our Never Miss system, and I’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
