Antonio Banderas Joins Nicolas Cage For ‘True Detective’ Season 5 As HBO Confirms New Lead Duo

by Dave Elliott

Well, this is quite the pairing. Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory, The Mask of Zorro) is joining Nicolas Cage (Pig, Dream Scenario) for Season 5 of HBO’s acclaimed crime anthology ‘True Detective‘, with production set to begin in 2027.

The casting gives the next instalment of the series two very recognisable leading men, and potentially two very different acting styles to throw into the same dark, twisted mystery. Cage had already let the cat out of the bag during New York Comic Con earlier this month, following more than a year of reports linking him to the project. Now HBO has made it official and revealed that Banderas will be joining him.

Cage will play Henry Logan, while Banderas has been cast as Rai García. And that’s pretty much all we know about the characters so far. HBO isn’t saying whether they’re detectives, suspects, reluctant allies or people who would be much better off moving somewhere else. Given the show’s history, the last option might be worth considering.

From the Alaskan wilderness to New York

According to Deadline, Season 5 will be set around Jamaica Bay in New York, taking ‘True Detective’ away from the frozen Alaskan landscape of its previous outing and into a very different environment. The bay sits between Brooklyn and Queens, offering plenty of potential for the sort of atmospheric, unsettling crime story the series does so well.

Returning to steer the ship is Issa López, who wrote, directed and served as showrunner on Season 4, ‘True Detective: Night Country’. That instalment starred Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs) and Kali Reis (Catch the Fair One) as investigators confronting a bizarre disappearance in the fictional Alaskan town of Ennis.

While the anthology format means each season introduces a fresh case and new central characters, López has previously teased that there will be some “important connections” between the events of ‘True Detective: Night Country’ and the new story.

She also made clear this isn’t simply a continuation of the previous mystery. “That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything,” she told the New York Post.

So, new location, new cast, new nightmare. But perhaps a few familiar threads lurking beneath the surface.

A rather impressive history of leading actors

‘True Detective’ has never struggled to attract big names. The first season brought together Matthew McConaughey (Interstellar) and Woody Harrelson (Zombieland) for a Louisiana-set mystery which helped establish the series as one of television’s most talked-about crime dramas.

Season 2 moved to California, with Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight) and Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers). Season 3 headed to the Ozarks with Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Stephen Dorff (Blade), before Jodie Foster and Kali Reis took the reins in Alaska.

The arrival of Cage and Banderas continues that tradition of building each new story around formidable star power. And, frankly, the prospect of watching Nicolas Cage navigate an Issa López mystery alongside Antonio Banderas is already a pretty good selling point, even without a plot synopsis.

Behind the scenes, López returns as writer, director, showrunner and executive producer, with Daniel Zelman (Damages) also writing and executive producing. Cage and Banderas are among the executive producers, alongside original series creator Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Joji Fukunaga, McConaughey and Harrelson, among others.

There is still a wait ahead. Filming is scheduled to begin in 2027, and HBO has not announced a premiere window, let alone an exact date. With HBO Max now available in the UK, that’s where we’d expect the new season to land when it is ready.

‘True Detective‘ Season 5 has no confirmed UK premiere date, and is expected to stream on HBO Max.

In this case it will be both Sky Atlantic and whatever the streamer is in 2028
