‘American Horror Story’ Renewed For Season 14 As FX’s Horror Anthology Refuses To Die

by Dave Elliott

Apparently, 13 isn’t such an unlucky number after all. FX has officially renewed ‘American Horror Story‘ for a 14th season, confirming that Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s long-running horror anthology has plenty more nightmares left to unleash.

The renewal arrives as ‘AHS: 13’ heads towards its Halloween finale, following what FX says was the show’s biggest streaming premiere to date. The season premiere made Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10, while FX says the launch also became Murphy’s biggest ever on Hulu and Disney+, based on views in its first four days. Clearly, audiences still enjoy being thoroughly traumatised by this particular franchise.

The First New Renewal In Almost Seven Years

There’s an interesting bit of history behind this announcement. This is actually the first time FX has renewed the anthology in nearly seven years. Back in January 2020, the network handed the series a three-season order covering Seasons 11, 12 and 13.

With that deal finally reaching its end, and the current season landing on the appropriately ominous number 13, there had been some speculation that the show might be heading towards its final resting place. Instead, FX has decided there’s still life in the old corpse.

It’s a particularly encouraging vote of confidence given the scale of the current season. Rather than telling another entirely separate story, ‘AHS: 13’ has gone for a crossover event, drawing together characters and storylines from across the anthology’s history. Much of the action centres on the Apollyon, a deeply suspicious New York residential building with some rather unpleasant secrets in its basement. So, fairly standard Manhattan property problems.

That means a reunion of familiar faces, including Sarah Paulson (Ratched), Evan Peters (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Jessica Lange (Feud), Angela Bassett (9-1-1), Kathy Bates (Matlock) and Emma Roberts (Scream Queens). The wider cast also includes Billie Lourd (Scream Queens), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), Leslie Grossman (Popular) and Joey Pollari (Love, Simon), among many others.

Fans have also been reunited with characters from earlier stories, including Constance Langdon, Cordelia Goode, Marie Laveau, Twisty the Clown and Rubber Man. It’s basically the horror equivalent of an Avengers crossover, only with a significantly lower chance of anybody getting a happy ending.

What Do We Know About Season 14?

At the moment, not a great deal beyond the renewal itself. FX hasn’t announced a theme, setting, cast or premiere window for Season 14, so there’s no indication yet whether the next instalment will continue any of the current crossover storylines or return to the anthology’s usual fresh-start format.

For now, the focus remains on the conclusion of ‘AHS: 13’, which consists of 13 half-hour episodes. Two more episodes arrive in the US this week, followed by the season finale next week. UK viewers can follow the same run on Disney+, with episodes arriving on Fridays and the finale landing just ahead of Halloween.

Whatever happens next, the renewal extends an impressive run for a series that began back in 2011 with a murder house and has since taken viewers through an asylum, a coven of witches, a travelling freak show, a haunted hotel, the apocalypse and plenty of other deeply unpleasant places to spend an evening.

FX describes ‘American Horror Story’ as the longest-running hour-long series in the network’s history. Across its run, the franchise has received more than 100 Emmy nominations and 17 wins, and FX says it has generated nearly two billion hours of global engagement. That’s a rather substantial amount of time spent hiding behind the sofa.

The anthology was created by Murphy and Falchuk, with the current instalment executive produced by the pair alongside Ned Martel, Charlie Carver and others. 20th Television produces the series.

‘American Horror Story‘ Season 14 has no announced premiere date yet. It will air on FX and Hulu in the US, and Disney+ in the UK. Season 13 continues on Disney+ UK, with its finale arriving Friday, 30th October 2026.
