HBO’s ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ Casts Charlie Weasley, James Potter And Lily Potter

The Weasley family is getting a little bigger, and Harry’s family tree is filling out too! HBO has announced three new cast members for ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone‘, with Charlie Weasley and Harry’s parents, James and Lily Potter, joining the upcoming series ahead of its Christmas premiere on HBO Max.

Harry Gilby (The Last Kingdom, Tolkien) will take on the role of Charlie Weasley, Jasper Talbot (Broadchurch, Inter Alia) has been cast as James Potter, and Hannah Chinn (The Conjuring: Last Rites, Domina) will portray Lily Potter.

Of the three announcements, Charlie Weasley is perhaps the most intriguing, particularly given that the first season is adapting the opening book in J.K. Rowling’s hugely popular series.

For those who need a quick refresher, Charlie is one of Ron Weasley’s older brothers, a former Hogwarts student and Quidditch captain who goes on to work with dragons in Romania. He plays a small but important part in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, helping arrange the removal of Hagrid’s rather troublesome baby dragon, Norbert.

However, there’s an interesting wrinkle here. Charlie never actually appears in person in the first book. Instead, he communicates with Ron by letter and arranges for some friends to collect Norbert from Hogwarts. The character was also absent from the original film adaptation.

That makes his casting particularly interesting. Could HBO be planning to expand Charlie’s involvement, perhaps giving us a glimpse of his life working with dragons, or adding more scenes involving the wider Weasley family? It’s certainly possible, although HBO hasn’t revealed how the character will feature. Given that the television adaptation has considerably more room to explore the books than the films did, it would be a rather fun addition.

The casting of James and Lily Potter is a little less surprising, although no less important. Harry’s late parents are central to his story, and fans will remember the emotional moment when Harry first sees his family in the Mirror of Erised. It’s one of the most memorable sequences from the original book, and it will be interesting to see how the new adaptation handles it.

The three newcomers join an already extensive cast led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

They’ll be joined by John Lithgow (The Crown) as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (Ozark) as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) as Severus Snape, Nick Frost (Spaced) as Rubeus Hagrid and Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd) as Molly Weasley, amongst many others.

The eight-episode first season follows Harry as he discovers that his rather ordinary (and thoroughly unpleasant) life with the Dursleys is anything but normal. An unexpected invitation to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry opens the door to a world of magic, friendship and adventure, but also a dangerous connection to the darkest wizard of all.

The adaptation is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, David Heyman, Laura Neal and Jon Brown also serve as executive producers.

With casting already announced for the second season, which will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, HBO clearly isn’t wasting any time building its new wizarding world. And if Charlie Weasley’s appearance is anything to go by, we may be getting to know some of the Potter universe’s less-explored characters rather better this time around.

‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone‘ Season 1 premieres Friday, 25th December 2026 on HBO Max UK, and on HBO and HBO Max in the US.
