Bath-set crime drama McDonald & Dodds will end after the conclusion of Series 4, ITV has confirmed. The show follows the exploits of two mismatched detectives DCI Lauren McDonald played by Tala Gouveia and her bespectacled sidekick DS Dodds, portrayed by Jason Watkins.
Originally called Invisible, McDonald & Dodds made its debut on ITV in March 2020 with two episodes. After a success in ratings, the show was renewed for a second series which was screened in February 2021, once again with two episodes, which was followed by a third series, broadcast from June 2022 to July 2022. The show involves two mismatched detectives solve each crimes around the Bath and the surrounding area.
Alongside Gouveia and Watkins, there are several guest actors appearing on the show from the likes of Rob Brydon, Hugh Dennis, Martin Kemp, Patsy Kensit, Nitin Ganatra, Alan Davies, Kelvin Fletcher, Paul McGann, Sian Phillips, Joanna Scanlan, Lydia Leonard, Ace Bhatti, Toby Stephens, John Gordon Sinclair, Daniel Lapaine, Pixie Lott and Dipo Ola.
The crime drama will conclude with the final three episodes of the fourth series, which was renewed by ITV in March 2023. Filming for the fourth series began in June 2023.and continued through the summer before wrapping up at the end of September 2023.
The plot for the fourth and final series reads: “McDonald and Dodds begin to investigate when a middle-aged woman is found shot dead in a rented flat.
“The killer has removed all clues to her identity, but DNA reveals she went missing over 35 years ago. Where has she been all those years? And who with?”

I think McDonald & Dodds will end after Series 4 because it will be the final series to air after 4 years. It will be the 3rd Mammoth Screen-produced TV drama to be axed by ITV following the cancellations of ITV dramas, Victoria and Endeavour in 2019 and 2023 respectively, also produced by Mammoth Screen. ITV has no plans to make 5th series of McDonald & Dodds.
