Abducted from her village in West Africa, eleven-year-old Aminata is forced into a slave coffle and must endure a horrific ocean crossing. She is taken to a South Carolina plantation where she makes herself useful by using midwifery skills that she learned from her mother, all the while keeping the attentions of her jealous slave master, Robinson Appleby, at bay. Soon after Aminata re-encounters Chekura, a fellow slave from West Africa and they are married in a clandestine ceremony. When their first baby is brutally abducted and sold by Appleby, Aminata vows that she will one day return to her homeland and escape her life in slavery.
Someone Knows My Name stars Aunjanue Ellis (The Help, NCIS) as Aminata Diallo who is captured as a young girl from West Africa and sold into slavery, Chekura played by Lyriq Bent (Saw) is a fellow-slave who meets Aminata on her journey and later becomes her husband. Greg Bryk (The Incredible Hulk) plays Robinson Appleby, a jealous slave master, Louis Gossett Jr. (An Officer and a Gentleman) plays Daddy Moses who gives Aminata shelter in Nova Scotia, Cuba Gooding Jr. (American Crime Story) plays Sam Fraunces who gives Aminata a job when she lives in New York and British actor Ben Chaplin (Mad Dogs, Cinderella) plays Captain John Clarkson, a naval officer and abolitionist who helps to set up Freetown.
