TJ Miller will join the ever expanding cast of Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One it has been announced. The Silicon Valley actor is no stranger to big movie roles, have recently starred in the smash hit superhero film Deadpool, and previously appeared in Cloverfield and Transformers: Age of Extinction.
If you’re unfamiliar with the novel (we urge you to to go out and buy a copy right now) the story is set in a dystopian 2044, where people escape the horrors of real life by “living” inside OASIS, an MMORPG, virtual utopia, where you can been anyone you want. OASIS has become more than a game to the world – to many, it now is the world. Businesses use it for work, people use it to communicate and play, in a massive virtual universe containing thousands of planets.
When the creator of OASIS, James Halliday, dies leaving no heir, it triggers the ultimate competition within the virtual space, promising to give control of the entire system to anyone who can crack a series of ‘easter eggs’ the 80’s obsessed Halliday has left behind. Millions of people, and corporations, have tried and failed to gain the ultimate prize as it would basically mean control of the both the virtual, and real world economies. It’s not until Wade, a young boy and ‘gunter’ (easter egg hunters), stumbles upon the first major clue, that the competition really heats up, putting Wades life in danger, not only in the virtual world, but in real world as well!
The movie of Ready Player One already has a pretty stellar cast list. Tye Sheridan (Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse) takes the lead as Wade/Parzival (the name of his OASIS virtual avatar). Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) plays Art3mis, a rival gunter, but also someone Wade has a massive crush on. The brilliant Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, Wolf Hall) plays OASIS creator James Halliday, with Simon Pegg (Star Trek, Shaun of the Dead) playing Ogden Morrow, co-creator of OASIS and best friend of Halliday.
TJ Miller will be playing I-R0k, an important but small part in the book. I-R0k is, what we’d call in current gaming terms, a ‘griefer’. Someone who is basically a jerk that wants to ruin everyone else’s fun, but his interference in Wade’s quest has a major impact on him reaching his prize.
The Ready Player One movie is due to land in cinemas, March 2018, but you can go out and buy the book right now.
