Game Of Thrones Season 7 Comes With Added… Ed Sheeran?? Plus Other News From SXSW

Over the weekend, Game Of Thrones bosses David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with Maisie Williams (aka Arya) and Sophie Turner (aka Sansa), held a panel at the SXSW Conference, where they gave away a few little bits of info about the upcoming series, and the future of the show.

One of the most notable bits of information was that a certain ginger british singer would be making a guest appearance in season 7. This isn’t the first time musical acts have popped up on the show – Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Coldplay’s Will Champion and Sigur Rós have all appeared as background artists at various points. The purpose of Ed Sheeran’s little cameo was as a present to Maisie. “We knew that Maisie was a big fan of Ed Sheeran,” commented Benioff, “and for years we’ve been trying to get him on the show so we can surprise Maisie. This year we finally did it!”

Other news to come out of their chat was that Season 8 would only be 6 episodes… Although, they didn’t say how long those episodes would be, they did say that just the outline for the story of that season comes in at a whopping 140 pages! So there’s either a massive amount to pack into 6 hours, or we could be seeing some longer episodes throughout that run. The also announced Season 8 will have 4 writers – episode 1 will be written by Dave Hill, episode 2 by Bryan Cogman, and the final 4 by Benioff and Weiss.

There was some discussion of the long mooted idea of a spin-off series as well. Benioff commented “there is always going to be an urge” to carry on, but also said, if HBO do decide they want more shows in Westeros, not to count on their involvement. “I think its better for them to get new blood in with new visions,” he added. He then goes on to joke “Hodor is going to get his own prequel spinoff series, it’s a multi-cam sitcom!”

I don’t know about you, but I’d still watch!

Game Of Thrones, Season 7 returns to Sky Atlantic on the 17th July 2017 at 2am, with a repeat airing at a more sensible time the following day.
