Mark-Paul Gosselaar Take Lead In Vampire Drama ‘The Passage’

Fox has commissioned a new vampire-esque pilot with Mark-Paul Gosselaar in the lead, the US network announced today.

‘The Passage’ is an adaptation of Justin Cronin’s trilogy of novels, written by Liz Heldens (Deception, Mercy) and directed by Marcos Siega (The Following, The Vampire Diaries, Blindspot).  The show is as an “an epic, character-driven thriller that morphs into a post-apocalyptic odyssey,” spanning 2 timelines over the course of a century.

The ‘present day’ storyline is set in a world which has been infected by a virus which turns people into blood-thirsty monsters. The show follows 10yr old Amy (Saniyya Sidney – American Horror Story, Fences, Hidden Figures), who appears to have powers which allow her to communicate with the ‘virals’. When the Amy is rescued from the monsters by a couple from an isolated group in Palm Springs, through flashbacks, she relates the story of the her connection to the ‘virals’ and the genesis of the outbreak.

Placed in foster care after the death of her mother, Amy was ‘retrieved’ by FBI Agent Brad Wolgast (Gossellaar) to take part in something called ‘Project Noah’. It’s the old tale of a secret government organization trying to make super soldiers from death row inmates, but screwing up, and making monsters instead. In this case the monsters are given psychic abilities, allowing them to control their captures… Being evil mad scientist types, the Project Noah administrators decide experimenting on a child, whose brain is less developed, may help solve the problem. Having bonded with Amy, and uneasy at what they are doing to her, Wolgast escapes the facility with the girl and goes on the run. However, as the story progresses, it becomes clear that Amy may very well be the key to saving humanity…

Also joining the cast are Genesis Rodriguez (Time After Time, Big Hero 6), Brianne Howey (The Exorcist, Revenge), B.J. Britt (Agents of SHIELD, UnREAL) and Jennifer Ferrin (Hell on Wheels, The Knick, Falling Skies). Mark-Paul Gosselaar has starred in Pitch, Franklin & Bash, and NYPD Blue, but is of course, still probably best remembered as Zack Morris in Saved by the Bell.

‘The Passage’ is currently only at the pilot stage, but all signs are pointing to it being likely to go to series. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
