Legendary adventure game show The Crystal Maze is back, and will air on Friday 23rd June at 9pm Channel 4 have announced.

New host, Richard Ayoade, takes teams of five contestants off to navigate the Aztec, Medieval, Industrial and Futuristic zones of the maze. They will face a range of skill, mystery, physical and mental challenges to win crystals that equate to time in the final test – the legendary Crystal Dome.

The first show will be a “celebrity” special featuring Ore Oduba, Vicky Pattison, Alex Brooker, Lydia Bright and Louie Spence as the hope to crack the crystal in aid of ‘Stand Up To Cancer’.

Channel 4 were inspired to reboot the series, which originally ran from 1990 to 1995, after the ‘Stand Up To Cancer’ celebrity special hosted by Stephen Merchant in October last year drew an audience of 4.3 million viewers. This new series is filmed at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol, where a purpose built maze spanning over 30,000 square feet has been created by the original Crystal Maze designer, James Dillon (The Mighty Boosh, The Royle Family).

“The Stand Up To Cancer special was so brilliant and so successful that commissioning a series of The Crystal Maze was almost a no-brainer,” commented Tom Beck, Commissioning Editor at Channel 4. “And I couldn’t be more pleased and excited that Richard has agreed to become the new Maze Master – he’s an inspired choice.”

The Crystal Maze‘ will air Friday 23rd June 2017 at 9pm on Channel 4.
