Casting Ramps Up For Stephen King & J. J. Abrams TV Series ‘Castle Rock’

by Dave Elliott

For those of you who are fans of Stephen King, Castle Rock is definitely a show you are going to want to keep on your radar. Not only is it based on King’s work, it’s from J. J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions (Westworld, Lost, Fringe, Person of Interest), and has started to assemble a really interesting cast.

Set in the Stephen King multiverse, ‘Castle Rock’ is a psychological/horror series which combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland.

The fictional Maine town of Castle Rock has figured prominently in King’s extensive career.  Cujo, The Dark Half, ITNeedful ThingsThe Shawshank Redemption, plus many more stories, are all either set in the town or contain references to the area.

Rather than following one single King novel, ‘Castle Rock’ is an original suspense/thriller which reimagines the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories.

Of course, if you have a show set in a town, you need residents, and ‘Castle Rock’ is assembling an intriguing cast of characters…

André Holland (Moonlight, The Knick, American Horror Story: Roanoke) has been cast as death row defence attorney Henry Deaver, who is said to have a unique and complicated history in the town.

Melanie Lynskey (Girlboss, Two and a Half Men) joins as the female lead, Molly Strand. She has a rare medical condition, and the unenviable job of being the town’s real estate agent… Which is not easy in a place where every other property is the site of someone’s worst nightmare!

Sissy Spacek is someone who’s no stranger to King’s work, having played the title role in the Brian De Palma’s classic 1976 horror film ‘Carrie’. She is joining as Ruth Deaver, Henry’s estranged adoptive mother, and a retired professor whose failing memory might hold a key to the town’s unsettling past.

Jane Levy (Shameless US, Suburgatory) will play Jackie, a morbid, death-obsessed girl who’s appointed herself the historian of Castle Rock.

Overall, I’d say Castle Rock is shaping up to be a very interesting looking tv series. The show will air on Hulu in the US but doesn’t yet have a UK broadcaster. Keep an eye on the Castle Rock UK Air Date page for the latest information.
