Supergirl Gets A New Mum, And It’s Lois Lane (aka Erica Durance!)

Supergirl will have a new Mum when she returns for her 3rd season in the Autumn it has been announced!

Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane in ‘Smallville’ will be taking over the role of Alura, after Laura Benanti, who originally played the character had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

“Unfortunately Laura, who Greg and I have worked with for years going back to ‘Eli Stone’, was unable to continue in the role due to work commitments in NY,” commented exec producer Andrew Kreisberg. “But we are so blessed that Erica has come aboard to offer her own interpretation of Kara’s mother. We had tremendous success with a former Lois Lane last season with Teri Hatcher. We know Erica will continue the proud tradition of legacy actors joining our shows and creating new and exciting takes on classic DC characters.”

Benanti had a baby girl back in February, so understandably, is looking to stay close to her home in New York for work. The actress tweeted “I loved working on this show and will miss it so much! Right now it’s time for me to be supermom to my own little one in NYC.”

Erica joins a number of other actors who have appeared in previous iterations of DC series to join ‘Supergirl’. Along with Teri Hatcher, former Superman Dean Cain has been playing Kara’s adopted father, Jeremiah Danvers, along with former Supergirl, Helen Slater, who plays Kara’s mother, and Laura Vandervoort, who popped up as Indigo, but played Supergirl on ‘Smallville’.

The Berlanti team have a habit of mining older DC talent across the Berlantiverse. John Wesley Shipp, who was Flash in the 90’s plays Barry’s dad (and Jay Garrick.) Brandon Routh who played the movie version of Superman returned to the fold as Ray Palmer in ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’. And, of course, the legendary Mark Hamill, who voiced the ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ Joker, reprised his other DC role as Trickster from the 90’s ‘Flash’ tv series.

Most recently, Erica Durance has just completed the final season of ‘Saving Hope’, alongside Michael Shanks… who also played Hawkman/Carter Hall in ‘Smallville’… I suspect every working actor in Canada, where the Berlanti shows are shot, will pop up in one of the DC series at some point!

Supergirl‘ will return to the UK on Sky 1 in the Autumn.
