SDCC: ‘Ready Player One’ Trailer

by Dave Elliott

This has been a film I’ve been very eager to get a glimpse of, as I was a huge fan of Ernest Cline’s novel. Now Steven Spielberg has dropped the first trailer for ‘Ready Player One’, and it looks amazing!

For those unfamiliar with the story (go pick up the book, it’s brilliant), it’s set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. To escape their dystopian reality, the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance).

When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger…

One of the unique things about the book is Halliday’s (and also Wade’s) obsession with the 80’s. This leads to a number of classic 80’s references popping up in the book, and as you can see from the trailer, in the film too. You may have noticed a certain Delorean in the footage, and I think I spotted Freddy Kreuger!

‘Ready Player One’ lands in cinemas from 30th March 2018.
