HIMYM Spin-off ‘How I Met Your Father’ In Development (again… again!)
If you’re thinking “Didn’t we do this already?”, yes… Yes, we did. Twice in fact. But apparently, CBS are hoping 3rd time will be the charm, as they, once again, put a ‘How I Met Your Mother’ spin-off into development.
They first tried to launch a spin-off, which flips the roles, having a mother tell the story to her kids of how she met their father, back in 2014 with ‘How I Met Your Dad’. That version, which featured Meg Ryan providing the narrative, actually made it all the way to having a pilot made before the network decided not to move forward.
The 2nd attempt came in 2016 with ‘How I Met Your Father’, written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Fortunately for them, but unfortunately for CBS, the duo were also writing and producing a little show called ‘This Is Us’. The massive success of that series squashed any chance of them being able to manage a HIMYM spin-off as well, so it was dropped once again.
Now, CBS are trying a 3rd time, with brand new writers, starting from scratch. “It’s one that’s being slowly cooked,” comments 20th Century Fox TV chairman Dana Walden. “If it’s the right idea, the right execution, we’ll take that.” No news on who those writers are yet, but we’ll keep you updated when we hear more… Or when CBS try for the 4th time…
