Stephen Mangan To Star In ‘Hang Ups’, UK Adaptation Of ‘Web Therapy’ For Channel 4

Stephen Mangan is returning to Channel 4 in a UK adaptation of Showtime’s Emmy-nominated series ‘Web Therapy’ it has been announced.

Retitled Hang Ups, Mangan will play Dr. Richard Pitt, whose therapy practice has folded. As he’s now unable to conduct appointments with his patients in the traditional way, he does the next obvious thing, and turns to the internet, taking weekly quick-fire sessions online via webcam.

His clients present a catalog of neuroses, phobias, issues, anxieties, and psychopathies, but he finds the challenges come less from his patients, and more from the daily interruptions of a demanding extended family, errant teenagers, and his own trouble-filled past.

‘Web Therapy’ was created by ‘Friends’ star Lisa Kudrow, and originally aired as a web series before being picked up by Showtime in the US. The dark comedy was notable for allowing the actors to improvise much of the therapy sessions, which is something that will also be utilised in the UK version.

“People are complex and complicated and they lead messy, knotty lives,” comments Mangan, who will co-write the series with Robert Delamere. “We’ve tried to put some of that all-too-familiar turmoil on-screen and the result, I think, is chaotic, glorious and disturbing.”

“Stephen Mangan and Robert Delamere have achieved the almost impossible task of creating a brilliantly farcical show that is at heart a family sitcom,” adds Fiona McDermott, Head of Comedy at Channel. “An ambitious, modern comedy, Hang Ups is a timely, inventive and very funny exploration of the ridiculous pile up of challenges we call modern life.”

Channel 4 has commissioned 6 half hour episodes o Hang Ups, which will shoot later this year for broadcast in 2018.
