‘Gilmore Girls’ Creators Sign Multi-Year Deal… With Amazon.

For those of you out there hoping for more ‘Gilmore Girls’ after Netflix revived the series for a season of specials last year, might be in for a bit of a wait… Show creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino have signed a multi-year overall deal with rivals Amazon Studios the streaming company has announced, although all hope is not lost…

The duo with will develop television projects that will add to their unprecedented two-season greenlight of upcoming Amazon Original Series ‘The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’, which debuts this Autumn on Prime Video UK. “Amy and Dan are brilliant. Everything they create has such an incredible vision behind it. On top of that, they’re wonderfully funny and smart people. Also, Amy has the best hats in show business,” said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy, Drama and VR, Amazon Studios. “We’re excited about the next two seasons of ‘The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’ with them and, with this deal, we can’t wait to do a lot more together.”

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, written and directed by Sherman-Palladino, and executive produced by Sherman-Palladino and Palladino, stars Rachel Brosnahan (‘House of Cards’) as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a 1958 New York City woman who has everything she’s ever wanted—the perfect husband, two kids, and an elegant Upper West Side apartment perfect for hosting Yom Kippur dinner. But her perfect life suddenly takes an unexpected turn and Midge discovers a previously unknown talent—one that changes her life forever. She charts a course that takes her from her comfortable life on Riverside Drive, through the basket houses and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she storms the world of stand-up comedy… a course that will ultimately lead her to a spot on Johnny Carson’s couch. The series also stars Michael Zegen (‘Boardwalk Empire’) as Midge’s husband Joel Maisel, Alex Borstein (‘Family Guy’) as Susie Myerson, Golden Globe winner and three-time Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub (‘Monk’) as Midge’s father Abe Weissman, and Marin Hinkle (‘Two and a Half Men’) as Midge’s mother Rose Weissman.

Whilst this is great news for Amazon, it does make it a lot less likely we will be seeing any more ‘Gilmore Girls’ anytime soon if this deal locks them to Amazon for multiple years. Couple that with the fact Alexis Bledel is currently starring in an Emmy winning role on ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ – as creator Bruce Miller put it, thanking Hulu for supporting them “when we wanted to do horrible things to Rory Gilmore,” – and Lauren Graham has also landed a role on the 9th season of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, it seems unlikely we’ll be getting more of Lorelai and Rory in the foreseeable future.

UPDATE: Having said that, news is now coming through that the contract has an ‘out’ clause specifically for ‘Gilmore Girls’, should the pair find the time and inspiration to make a new series of the show. Whilst it doesn’t mean it will happen, the option is there should they have the opportunity to take it.

The full series of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel comes to Amazon Prime UK in the Autumn, but you can watch the pilot episode on the streaming service right now.
