With his brother Charlie dead, Alan Harper can no longer afford mortgages on the house he shared with him, along with his son Jake. However, Alan befriends the divorced and suicidal billionaire Walden Schmidt, who, after some male bonding over drinks, decides to buy the house, but allows Alan and Jake to carry on living there.
